My Personal Statement!
Coach Lou Rood
Friday March 20, 2009
First
of all I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome I have
received since being named Head Football Coach at Bentworth. It has
been a busy first week as I have tried to hit the ground running and
touch base with as many people as possible. I have already had very
productive meetings with the Athletic Director, Mr. Link and the
Principal, Mr. Lammay. In addition, I have had the opportunity to meet
and talk with some of the players and get to know them. I will be
scheduling a meeting with the players soon in order to introduce myself
to the group and take their questions.
One
of the other key items I have been working on this week is putting
together a Coaching Staff. I have met with teachers in the district
who might be interested in coaching and explained my expectations of
them and the program. I have also spoken to coaches outside the
program to gauge their interest in coaching at Bentworth.
To date the
one solid commitment I have is from Adam Santoro who served as an
assistant and my Offensive Coordinator at Belle Vernon Area these past
three years. In addition, he served as the Offensive Coordinator of
the Pittsburgh Passion in 2007-08 helping them to a 21-1 record over
that time period and a National Championship in 2007. He will be
serving in the same capacity for me at Bentworth and we will be
installing the same type of offense that we used at BVA and with the
Passion. I plan on serving as the Defensive Coordinator and will be
using the same defense that we used with both Belle Vernon and
Pittsburgh.
I know that a major concern of the older players is that this will be the 3rd
different offense and defense that they have had to learn, and I
sympathize with them. However, these systems are fairly easy to
learn and are very effective. The basis from both comes from Coach Gary
Dongilli and what he ran at BVA from 1994-2000 and previously at Yough
High School. Coach Dongilli had great success at both schools with
these systems winning numerous conference championships and 1 WPIAL
Title along with two runner-up trophies in AAA.
When I was named Head
Coach of the Pittsburgh Passion in 2004, I installed the same systems
and the team went from 2-6 to 6-2 in one year. Upon returning to the
Passion in 2007 as a consultant/coach, the systems were re-installed
and the results were remarkable (see above). We also used it to turn
BVA from 0-10, scoring only 35 points on the season in 2005, to 5-5(4-2
Conference) and a WPIAL playoff appearance in 2006. Coach Santoro and
I obviously have great belief in the systems and we are confident that
once the players start to learn them they will begin to believe as well.
What’s
so special about these systems? That is something I will touch upon at
the Meet the Coach Night this Monday night March 23rd at
7:00 PM in the Bentworth High School Library. I would like to invite
everyone to the event and look forward to meeting you. I plan on
giving you my coaching background and some insight into my philosophies
and expectations for the Bentworth Football program. Also, I would be
happy to answer any questions you might have pertaining to Bearcat
Football.
It has been a busy but rewarding 1st
week as the Bentworth Head Coach. I have had the chance to meet many
different people involved in all aspects of the Bearcat Football
Program, and I have come away impressed with the dedication and passion
you have for your football program and your community as a whole.
I am
sincerely grateful that I have been chosen to be your head coach and am
very happy to be a part of the Bearcat Football Family. I will see you Monday at 7:00 PM in the High School Library.
